ARRI Alexa Mini LF Workflow Guide

Technical analysis of the ALEV III A2X sensor. Latitude management via Exposure Index (EI), LogC color science, and format workflow of the ARRI Alexa Mini LF.

Exposure Index (EI) & Latitude

The Alexa Mini LF offers 14+ stops of fixed dynamic range. Modifying EI shifts the allocation of stops above or below 18% middle grey.

Dynamic Range Distribution (Stops)

EI 400 (Low Light Ratio)

You lose one stop in highlights (6.4 stops), but gain one in shadows (8.0 stops). The image is dense and extremely clean. Perfect for green screen.

EI 800 (Base ISO ARRI)

ARRI's ideal balance. Offers 7.4 stops above middle grey and 7.0 below. It's the industry standard ensuring the perfect highlight roll-off.

EI 1600 (Highlight Protection)

Shifts priority upwards (8.4 stops in highlights). Excellent for sunny exteriors or bright cloudy skies. Slightly increases organic grain in shadows.

Format Workflow: RAW vs ProRes

Unlike other systems, Alexa's ProRes is considered feature-film quality. The choice is extreme flexibility vs efficiency.

LogC3 & Highlight Roll-off

The Alexa is famous for its soft-clipping transition to pure white. Simulate the on-set LUT application.

Exposure Tools: ARRI False Color

ARRI False Color is the industry standard. IRE values are specifically mapped for the LogC3 curve.

Red (99-100%): Clipping. Unrecoverable highlight data.
Yellow (97-99%): Clip warning. Strong specular reflections.
Pink (52-56%): Caucasian skin (1 stop above middle grey). Face target.
Green (38-42%): 18% Middle Grey. Exposure anchor.
Cyan (2.5-4%): Dense shadows with recoverable details.
Purple (0-2.5%): Crushed blacks or extreme Noise Floor.

From prep room to final grade: a Mini LF decision path

On a fashion production, the Mini LF should be selected from the shot architecture rather than from its reputation. Prep begins by testing the actual wardrobe, skin tones and reflective accessories under the intended lighting. The practical questions are which focal lengths preserve the desired perspective, how much depth of field the focus team can manage, and whether the image must move continuously from a full silhouette to a beauty close-up. A short camera test with the planned lenses, diffusion and monitoring transform reveals more than an abstract comparison. It also lets costume and beauty departments see how dark fabrics, pale textiles, jewellery and makeup respond before the lighting plan is locked.

The camera build should then follow the dominant movement language. A handheld configuration, a stabilised rig and a studio dolly each require different choices for power, wireless video, matte box, remote focus and operator monitoring. Trying to make one oversized build serve every setup usually costs more time than preparing two documented configurations. The first assistant camera should receive the final lens order, filter strategy and intended focus distances early enough to identify difficult transitions. Media capacity, card rotation and offload speed should be calculated from the selected recording format and the real shooting ratio, including rehearsals and performance variations.

Finally, the on-set image is the beginning of the colour workflow. Use one approved monitoring transform across the director, client and lighting monitors, and record intentional exposure offsets rather than relying on memory. Test both bright fabric near clipping and black tailoring close to the noise floor, because a fashion image often needs detail at both ends simultaneously. Camera reports should carry lens, filter, colour-temperature and exposure notes into the grade. This discipline lets the colourist refine skin, textile separation and contrast without reverse-engineering inconsistent set decisions.

Before the shoot closes, keep one compact handoff package with the approved framing references, camera and lens list, recording settings, monitoring transform, colour-temperature strategy, filtration notes, media report and two or three representative stills. Editorial should receive proxies whose filenames and timecode preserve a direct route back to the source media. The colourist should receive the same viewing reference used on set together with notes for intentional exposure changes. This is also the moment to identify which shots must support horizontal, square and vertical versions, rather than discovering the constraint after the cut is locked. A clear handoff is less visible than a new camera feature, but it protects more of the photographed intent across review, conform, grade and final delivery.
