Sony VENICE 2 Workflow Guide

Analysis of the 8.6K sensor. 16-bit X-OCN workflow, Dual Base ISO (800/3200) architecture, and the integrated 8-stop mechanical ND system for Hollywood productions.

True Dual Base ISO & 16 Stops

Unlike other cameras where high ISO sacrifices highlights, the Venice 2 has a dual analog circuit. At ISO 800 and ISO 3200 the latitude split (+6.0 / -10.0 stops) is identical.

Noise Floor Curve (S-Log3)

■ Base 800 (Daylight / Studio)

The standard ISO for 90% of productions. Offers 6 stops above 18% grey (great roll-off) and 10 stops in the shadows for incredibly rich, clean blacks.

▶ Pushing Base 800 (1000 - 2500)

Digital gain applied to Base 800. As you increase the value, noise is added to the shadows, and stops are 'stolen' from blacks to give to highlights. Avoid unless strictly necessary.

▲ Base 3200 (Low Light)

The analog circuit switches to the second stage. Noise resets almost to ISO 800 levels. Unbelievably clean for night exteriors or slow lenses (T4.0+). Latitude resets to exactly 16 stops (+6 / -10).

8-Step Mechanical ND System

Two independent motorized wheels allow stacking high-quality optical ND filters with zero color shift (perfect IR pollution control).

Light Transmission Simulator (Exposure Control)

Stops Reduced -0 Stops
Light Transmission (T%) 100%

No filter. Maximum light to sensor. Use indoors or night exteriors.

Data Workflow: 16-Bit X-OCN

X-OCN (eXtended tonal range Original Camera Negative) records linear 16-bit color depth with surprisingly lightweight files compared to uncompressed RAW.

Color Science: S-Log3 & s709 Look

Sony perfected skin tones with the 'Venice Look' (s709), an industry standard. Exposing S-Log3 requires precision.

The Venice Look (s709 LUT)

s709 is not a simple technical Rec.709 LUT. It was engineered to emulate cinematic film print:

  • • Softer contrast compared to standard Rec.709.
  • • Warm, rich, and natural skin tones with no magenta cast.
  • • Gentle highlight roll-off that retains color near the clip.

S-Log3 IRE Targets (Venice)

When exposing naked S-Log3, use these IRE percentages on your Zebras for textbook exposure.

61% IRE: 90% White (Piece of white paper).
47-52% IRE: Caucasian skin (Key Light).
41% IRE: 18% Middle Grey. The base of exposure.
35-40% IRE: Dark skin tones.
94% IRE: Sensor clipping. S-Log3 never reaches 100%.

Designing the camera around the set, not the opposite

A VENICE 2 package should be planned from the location, performance and camera position. If an extension-system configuration is being considered, test the complete arrangement with its cables, support, power and communication path before the shoot. Separating the sensor block from the main body may help in constrained spaces or on specialised movement systems, but it also changes how operator, assistant and DIT interact with the camera. For conventional builds, the same principle applies: define the dominant mode of movement first, then choose the shoulder, studio or stabilised configuration that keeps lens changes and operating transitions predictable.

Exposure testing should use the intended lighting rather than a generic chart alone. Include a face with final makeup, pale and dark garments, specular accessories and at least one practical source expected in the location. Select the working exposure index through those tests and record why it was chosen, especially if different environments require different approaches. Mixed daylight, LEDs and practical fixtures should be judged through the agreed viewing transform. The aim is not simply to preserve information, but to ensure that skin, fabric and set colour maintain the hierarchy approved by director and brand.

The production pipeline should connect acquisition, editorial and grading from the start. Confirm recording format, media volume, checksum workflow and proxy specifications with post before locking the shooting mode. Use consistent clip naming and camera reports, and carry lens, filtration, colour-temperature and exposure notes into finishing. When VENICE 2 is paired with a smaller Sony body, shoot a controlled match test and build the relationship in a colour-managed project rather than matching by eye on unrelated monitors. That preparation protects continuity across the hero film, backstage coverage and social cut-downs while leaving the grade room for a precise creative finish.

Before the shoot closes, keep one compact handoff package with the approved framing references, camera and lens list, recording settings, monitoring transform, colour-temperature strategy, filtration notes, media report and two or three representative stills. Editorial should receive proxies whose filenames and timecode preserve a direct route back to the source media. The colourist should receive the same viewing reference used on set together with notes for intentional exposure changes. This is also the moment to identify which shots must support horizontal, square and vertical versions, rather than discovering the constraint after the cut is locked. A clear handoff is less visible than a new camera feature, but it protects more of the photographed intent across review, conform, grade and final delivery.
