Sony FX3 Workflow Guide
Interactive guide to exposure, Dual Base ISO management (S-Log3 vs S-Cinetone), and cinematic autofocus workflow for the Sony FX3.
Dual Base ISO & Noise Floor
The FX3 uses two separate amplification circuits. Reaching the 'Second Base ISO' resets the noise floor. ISO 12800 is visually much cleaner than ISO 10000.
Noise Level in S-Log3
■ Base 1: ISO 800 (S-Log3)
Maximum dynamic range (15+ stops). Ideal for daylight, lit sets, and controlled conditions. The noise floor is at its absolute minimum.
▶ The 'Death Zone' (1600 - 10000)
The analog signal of Base 1 is digitally pushed. The higher you go, the muddier the shadows. Avoid ISO 10000 at all costs.
▲ Base 2: ISO 12800 (S-Log3)
The circuit resets. You get an image almost as clean as ISO 800. Use ND filters to cut light, but maintain ISO 12800 rather than dropping to 6400.
Picture Profiles & True Base ISOs
Base ISO values change drastically depending on the chosen gamma curve. Proper exposure requires knowing specific IRE targets.
S-Log3 (Cine EI)
Base ISO 1
800
Base ISO 2
12800
Curva logaritmica pura. Richiede sovraesposizione controllata (+1.0 a +1.7 EV) per pulire le ombre, nota come tecnica ETTR (Expose To The Right). Il Grigio 18% deve cadere a 41 IRE, il bianco a 61 IRE. Non usare S-Log3 se non hai intenzione di fare color grading pesante.
Exposure Tools: Zebras
Set your in-camera Zebras to nail exposure every time, especially in S-Log3.
Zebra 1: Skin Tones
Use this as your primary reference on human faces.
Target S-Log3
53 - 55 IRE (Range ±2)
Target S-Cinetone
70 - 75 IRE (Pelle caucasica)
Zebra 2: Highlight Clipping
Warns you exactly where the sensor loses data completely.
Target S-Log3
94+ IRE (S-Log3 clippa prima del 100%)
Target Standard
100+ IRE (Clipping digitale)
Cinematic AF: Shift & Transition
Balancing how fast focus changes (Transition) and how stubbornly it holds a subject (Shift).
Mechanical speed of the lens motor from point A to B.
1 (Slow Rack)4 (Normal)7 (Instant)
How easily the camera ignores foreground passing objects.
1 (Locked On)3 (Standard)5 (Responsive)

Small crew does not mean improvised colour
The FX3 can support an agile fashion unit, but the production should first decide what agility is buying. A compact setup may be valuable for vertical coverage, backstage movement, restricted locations or shots that need to stay close to the performer. Those benefits disappear if the body is surrounded by accessories added without a plan. Test the real lens, filtration, cage, monitor, power and stabilisation package together, and confirm that essential controls remain accessible. If the camera must switch between horizontal and vertical orientation, design both configurations in prep and mark the safe areas on the monitor rather than rebuilding under client pressure.
Operational discipline remains important on a small crew. Neutral-density strategy, shutter, focus support, battery rotation, media capacity and timecode should all be agreed before the first setup. Record a realistic performance test with fabric movement and changing distance, not only a static face, to check focus and stabilisation behaviour. Monitor heat, power and record duration under the conditions expected on location. If sound is captured, define whether it is a reference, synchronisation source or final recording and configure the audio path accordingly. These decisions keep a lightweight unit from creating avoidable uncertainty for editorial.
Colour should follow the same controlled path as the main camera. If S-Log3 is selected, use a clearly identified viewing transform and keep it consistent across operator and client monitors. Capture a chart, neutral reference and representative skin tone whenever the lighting environment changes materially. When matching FX3 to VENICE 2 or another cinema camera, compare both sources in the intended colour-managed project before production. Preserve original filenames and metadata in proxies so finishing can relink without ambiguity. The result is not a claim that two cameras are identical; it is a repeatable method for making their differences intentional and manageable.
Before the shoot closes, keep one compact handoff package with the approved framing references, camera and lens list, recording settings, monitoring transform, colour-temperature strategy, filtration notes, media report and two or three representative stills. Editorial should receive proxies whose filenames and timecode preserve a direct route back to the source media. The colourist should receive the same viewing reference used on set together with notes for intentional exposure changes. This is also the moment to identify which shots must support horizontal, square and vertical versions, rather than discovering the constraint after the cut is locked. A clear handoff is less visible than a new camera feature, but it protects more of the photographed intent across review, conform, grade and final delivery.
