RED Komodo X Workflow Guide

Advanced settings for the RED Komodo X. An interactive guide on ISO, RAW, contrast and exposure to maximize Global Shutter quality.

ISO & Dynamic Range

Changing ISO alters the distribution of dynamic range. The RAW file does not apply gain destructively.

Stop Mapping

Low ISO (250-400)

Fewer stops for highlights, extremely clean shadows. Ideal for controlled studio or green screen.

Recommended ISO (800)

Perfect balance (8.2 above, 8.3 below). Handles skies and shadows without excess noise.

High ISO (1600-3200)

Protects highlights (+10 stops). Introduces organic noise. Ideal for bright day exteriors.

RAW Parameters: REDCODE

Three wavelet-based compression tiers (HQ, MQ, LQ) balancing visual fidelity and storage.

Data Rate (6K 24fps)

Select HQ, MQ, or LQ

Discover technical details on image impact.

IPP2 Color Pipeline

Adjust Contrast and Highlight Roll-off for Output Transform (monitor viewing and LUTs).

Exposure Tools

Native exposure on RAW data via Goal Posts and False Color (Gio Scope).

Goal Posts (RAW)

  • Red on Right: Channel clipping. Lower exposure.
  • Yellow on Right: Upper latitude limit (clip warning).
  • Purple on Left: Critical underexposure (Noise floor).

False Color IRE

100+ IRE: Sensor clipping.
94-98 IRE: Specular whites.
56-60 IRE: Light skin tones.
40-44 IRE: Middle Grey / Dark skin.
10-12 IRE: Readable blacks.
0-4 IRE: Crushed black.

A compact body still needs a full production plan

KOMODO-X is most useful when its form supports a specific shot rather than merely reducing the visible footprint of the camera department. Tight locations, lightweight stabilised movement, vehicle mounting and unusual viewpoints can all justify a compact build, but each still requires proper lens, focus, monitoring and safety decisions. During prep, test the complete package at its working weight, including lens, filter, wireless transmitter, battery and mounting hardware. Confirm that the operator can reach essential controls and that the focus puller receives a dependable image. A small body does not compensate for a configuration that changes balance every time a lens is replaced.

Movement should be tested with the intended shutter settings and final playback cadence. Global-shutter capture can be relevant for rapid subject or camera motion, but it does not replace choreography, controlled lighting or a deliberate shutter choice. Fashion performance often depends on small differences in fabric movement, walking pace and gesture, so record representative actions rather than a generic chart. Review them at normal speed and in any planned slow-motion interpretation. This lets the director choose a motion texture before the schedule is under pressure and prevents technical novelty from dictating the visual language.

When KOMODO-X works beside another camera, matching begins before the grade. Use the same reference chart, skin tone, key light and key fabrics for both bodies; document white balance, exposure, filtration and the monitoring transform. Establish matching rules for editorial proxies and preserve original filenames and reel information through the relink. The DIT should also verify checksum copies and open representative clips before media returns to set. These steps make the compact camera a controlled extension of the main production rather than a disconnected specialty unit whose images require rescue later.

Before the shoot closes, keep one compact handoff package with the approved framing references, camera and lens list, recording settings, monitoring transform, colour-temperature strategy, filtration notes, media report and two or three representative stills. Editorial should receive proxies whose filenames and timecode preserve a direct route back to the source media. The colourist should receive the same viewing reference used on set together with notes for intentional exposure changes. This is also the moment to identify which shots must support horizontal, square and vertical versions, rather than discovering the constraint after the cut is locked. A clear handoff is less visible than a new camera feature, but it protects more of the photographed intent across review, conform, grade and final delivery.
